The Real Housewives of Pittsburgh

NOTLD3

Considering that George A. Romero started making films during one of the most turbulent decades in modern history (that would be the 1960’s, in case you were not sure), it’s easy to look at some of his earlier films and see the reflection of the times up there on the screen.  One of the things that I’ve often found most telling about Romero and his convictions, is the empathetic way most of his female characters are treated – indeed, all one needs to do is watch the follow up to Night of the Living Dead;  There’s Always Vanilla  a romantic comedy that touched briefly on the topic of abortion, and Jack’s Wife (AKA The Season of the Witch) which was a meditation on a Nixon-era-suburban-house-wife who feels the need to break free of her comfortable identity and explore other avenues in hopes of reinventing herself.  To me, at least, it seems that Romero understood the women of this era and the restrictions society put on them.

Later, we’d see similar themes pop up in Martin;  Martin’s female cousin is ready to hook up with a louse just so she can get a ticket out the dying city she’s stuck in, and Mrs. Santini is another unhappy housewife who seemingly finds solace in the arms of the film’s protagonist as they are both lost souls trying to find a way to some sort of happiness.  Both of the women in Martin appeared to be only able to change things with the help of a man and Romero understood that cold fact – the women’s movement might have been going strong in New York City and Los Angeles, but in the rust belt, things had not changed all that much.
***
In Night of the Living Dead, there are three women.  Each of them are beholden to men for their needs:  Barbara might be smarter than her brother Johnny, but once he’s killed by a zombie, she becomes a screaming hysterical mess who can only be subdued by a right hook (watch the movie again, Ben does not just slap her to shut her up, he deck’s her!).

ajudith Then there’s Judy.

Obviously, what we are seeing is a burgeoning hippie chick, but she’s still not able to make up her own mind unless she’s reassured and comforted by her boy friend…and even then, she can only end up as a roasted main course for the hungry zombies.

Finally, there is Helen Cooper – Harry’s wife.

Clearly, this well dressed, finely coiffured woman has been around the block.  She is very aware that her husband is a jack ass, and she even verbalizes this to him at one point when she says, “We aharryswife may not enjoy living together, but dying together isn’t going to solve any thing. “   Helen has probably even read The Feminine Mystique – but would it be enough for her to leave Harry and her daughter behind were the zombie apocalypse not happening?   Sadly, when push comes to shove, and Helen see’s her newly zombified daughter munching away on one of daddy’s limbs, she can do nothing but utter, “Poor baby”, and then fall down on the floor and scream while the little zombie brat stabs her .

In the end, the women in Night of the Living Dead all died because they depended on the men to save them.

Some ten years later, when Romero released, Dawn of the Dead, enough had changed in society to serve us up a female character who can not only hang with the boys, but can also be one of the survivors of the zombie uprising.

Frannie is a television producer who along with her boyfriend and two soldiers, beat a hasty retreat out of zombie-infested Philadelphia, to equally zombie infested Monroeville, where she and the boys set up house in a local shopping mall. 73008

At first, Fran takes a somewhat docile approach to things, until one day she’s almost killed by a Hare Krishna ghoul.  After this episode, Fran lays down the law: she wants to  learn how to use a gun, fly the helicopter, and most importantly, she is not going to play mommy for the three guys!

In one of the film’s most telling moments, the men discover that Fran is pregnant, and one of them say’s, “I can get rid of it”.  It’s downright chilling to see the matter-of-fact-way they discuss this situation, and when Fran overhears the conversation she confronts her boyfriend over the fact.

Fran (as well as the others) eventually becomes seduced by the mall.  Everything that anyone would need is close at hand – there’s a moment in the film when she is sitting at a makeup mirror piling on a ton of cosmetics until she looks like a hooker.  Eventually, she begins to remove the make up and turn back into her real self.

At film’s end, when the mall is breached by a marauding gang of bikers, Fran fights as hard as the guys to protect what they have.  But when the zombies get back into the mall, and her boyfriend is killed and reanimated, it’s clear that escape is the only option, and in the end, Fran (who is now operating the chopper) escapes with the other remaining solider.  Not only is she something of a hero, she may be humanity’s last hope for survival as she is pregnant.

In my eyes, Fran was the quintessential 70’s woman.  She might look good, but she’s also got the guts and gusto to be just as tough as one of the boys –  provided she spoke up - Gloria Steinem  would approve.

By the time Day of the Dead arrived  final girls and female soldiers were everywhere in movies.  From Ripley in Alien to Nancy Thompson in A Nightmare on Elm Street.  So when we meet Sarah, a gun toting, no nonsense scientist, we are in familiar territory.  Sarah is nobody’s fool, and she’s got balls big enough to go up against zombies, as well as gun happy crazy soldiers.  That she is the only woman stuck in an underground bunker with a group of men is rather interesting.   Clearly, a lesser director would have sexualized Sarah, but Romero, again, seemed to understand that the role of women in society had changed for the better and Sarah was an equal to the others (even if some of the men did not wish it so).

It seemed as if actress Lori Cardille might have been channeling Jane Fonda while playing Sarah, at least that’s what always comes to mind when I see her in this film, but whatever the case, she makes the scientist a force to reckon with whether she’s chopping off her boyfriend’s arm with a machete, or facing down a very deranged commanding army sergeant.

In spite of the fact that  Day of the Dead came out during the Reagan era, women were making major strides in business, politics and science, that said, Sarah may have been a reflection of both Margret Thatcher and  Sally Ride.

That her character survives, not only reinforces the notion that women, in Romero’s mind, will be the real hope for the future, but that it’s an  inevitability.

While he did not direct the 1990 remake of Night of the Living Dead, it was scripted by Romero.

Coming full circle, this time, we find that while Barbara does go a bit spastic at first, when she finally snaps out of it, she becomes a gun toting, hard ass who actually takes the time to watch the zombies and understand that all one would need to do to escape them is outrun them.  It’s Barbara who seems to be rising above all of the yelling and screaming and hysteria.  And ultimately, it’s Barbara, who not only survives, she kills the non zombified Harry Cooper while coolly noting, “That’s another one for the fire”.

Things don’t go as well for Helen Cooper this time.  Besides realizing that her husband is a jerk, it’s clear that he is also physically abusive.  One of the most disturbing scenes in NOLD 90 is when the Cooper’s are arguing and Harry smacks his wife in the face.  Granted, she strikes back, but still, it’s highly disturbing.  That said, Helen is still independent enough to walk away from her husband and try to assist in finding the elusive keys to the gas pump (try being the operative word here), but in the end, she’s still not strong enough to avoid her flesh eating daughter. hc1

Judy (now known as Judy Rose) is less of a doormat this time as well, she even threatens Ben and Harry reminding them that they are in her boyfriend’s house, and if they both don’t stop arguing, they can be thrown out.  But even so, she still can’t bring herself to admit that the dead are really coming back for the living (even though it’s going on all around her).  Like the Judy before her, this one also becomes a barbecued meal for the marauding ghouls.

As the film ends, Barbara, manages to make it to morning by not depending on anyone but herself – would that Helen and Judy Rose have done the same…

Romero has continued to populate his “Dead” films with strong female characters, and I am always pleased to note that.  One need only look at his most current, Survival of the Dead to see the characters of  Tomboy and Janet for proof.   And frankly, that’s one of the things I so admire about this man.  He could always take the easy way out and throw in a bunch of scantily clad female victims for the fan-boys to ogle, but I do believe  his aim has always been a bit higher.

Gay Men Trapped in the Body of a Female Horror Blogger 4 :Christine Hadden (AKA Marty Sylvester)

Tuesday's Gay Man Trapped in the Body of a Female Horror Blogger is that mistress of mayhem and proprietress of the blog, Fascination With Fear, Christine Hadden.  Chris is a fan of all things equestrian, a noted grammar Nazi, Vampire lover, and, as we just discovered, man of letters, murder mystery fanatic, dandy,  and gladiator movie enthusiast.

We caught up with Christine at the Rainbow Camp Grounds last summer where she was clearing some land for an afternoon poetry reading and Steve Reeves film festival:

1: Everyone knows your Female Horror Blogger Name, what's the name of the Gay Man Trapped inside?

Marty Sylvester.  He likes using his old word processor, sexy French accents, murder mystery weekends, and most especially - movies about gladiators.

2: Does your inner Gay Man ever affect your opinion on the films you are watching, and if so, how?

Sometimes I get a little too emotional when watching something and wonder just who that is inside me that makes me weep when poor Johnny Depp is sucked into the bed of doom in NOES.  And you know, I'm always looking for a bit of man-on-man action - what is up with that?  I mean seriously, wouldn't the remake of My Bloody Valentine have benefited from a steamy little scene between Jensen Ackles and Kerr Smith? Hells yeah!

3: How will you be celebrating Women in Horror Month this February? Do you celebrate it? If not, why not?

Last year I had a post about a Female Villain in Horror on my blog every single day of February.  I loved doing it but it just about killed me. This year I am bogged down with my (real-life) job, so it's just not possible.  I fully support WiH and love the attention that it brings to all the great work being done by women in this genre - though sometimes I feel as though we should be appreciating what women do all year round.  But it's nice to shine the spotlight regardless.  On a personal note, I am part of an up-coming all-female written issue of PARACINEMA, which will quite possibly be out this month to coordinate with WiH- so I'm pretty proud of that.

4: More importantly, how will you be celebrating Gay Pride Month this June?

Being from a small town isn't always conducive to tolerance and open-mindedness, so there is a lot of closeted folks around here I fear.  I however, am as liberal and unprejudiced a person as you'll find, so I am open to pretty much anything. Suggestions, please??  If I lived closer to California, I would so be making a trek to San Fran this June to check out that naked bike ride I've heard so much about.  Woot!

5: Is there a Grande Dame Moment in any horror film these days - some over-the-top performance by an actress akin to Bette Davis in “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane”?

There's a whole lot of over-the-top going on in horror these days, but there is a blatant difference between GOOD over-the-top and just pure excessive crap.  No one can touch Bette Davis, but I sure did appreciate Ted Levine's sexy little dance in The Silence of the Lambs.

6: Who would your inner Gay Man like to see running around naked in a horror film?

Most certainly Joe Manganiello, who plays Alcide on True Blood.  If you don't know who he is I only have one word for you:  Google.

7: Who would your outer Female Horror Blogger like to see running around naked in a horror film?

Much as I love Johnny Depp, I don't really have a wish to see him naked.  Hence, my answer is Timothy Olyphant.  But I'd like him to wear the hat from Justified please.  And if he were to be accompanied in his nakedness by one Chris Hemsworth - I wouldn't have a problem with that.

8: How do you balance the over-all-fabulousness of blogging with the more mundane aspects, that is your life?

I watch Glee.  It grounds me and forces me to sing show tunes in the shower.  And when I need to decompress, I watch episodes of Spartacus.  Sue us, Marty and I both like men in loin cloths, okay?

9: Do you think that there are some Lesbians Trapped in the Body of Straight Male Horror Bloggers?

There might be, but they will never (ever) admit it.

10: Gay or Straight, Trapped or Out: What is your view on Horror Blogging in General these days?

There are a hefty number of bloggers out there that think they are the next coming of Christ as far as horror entertainment goes, and it really amuses me.  To think so highly of one's self is to be a detriment to your reputation.  Please stop the Yoda crap.

I blog because I love horror and I have an inherent need to write.  I'm thankful for the opportunities that have come my way, and even more thankful for the great friendships I have formed over the last few years with people of like minds.   But...  I hate shitty reviews about really bad films and hate shittier grammar even more, so there's a whole lot out there I just avoid.  But that's the joy of it - with blogging, you can put whatever you want out there.  Whether or not people read it, that's just icing on the cake.

11: BONUS QUESTION: It's Friday Night, what are we drinking bitches?

Bourbon, baby.  Always bourbon.  Straight.  While wearing big, gaudy, "goin' to the Derby'-style hats of course.

Gay Men Trapped in the Body of a Female Horror Blogger 3 : Kristy Jett ( AKA Twinkey Bear)

Today's profile of a Gay Man Trapped in the Body of a Female Horror Blogger is that force of nature known as Kristy Jett.  Blog-mistress, horror-glad-rags-pusher, bad ass, and, revealed here for the first time,  a John Water's loving - Joseph Gordon Levitt stalking  Bear Cub.

We caught up with Kristy at the Eagle Bar in New York City last weekend... put on your protective gear and read what she had to say:

1: Everyone knows your Female Horror Blogger Name, what's the name of the Gay Man Trapped inside?

Twinkey Bear

2: Does your inner Gay Man ever color your opinion on the films you are watching, and if so, how?

My inner gay man is a bear who looks to be about 16 years old (just look at me!), so I tend to let him roll with the punches and enjoy tons of exploitation films like Black Shampoo and Bare Behind Bars. Let us not get started on my love and affinity for John Waters films- especially Divine!

3: How will you be celebrating Women in Horror Month this February? Do you celebrate it? If not, why not?

Oh do I celebrate Women In Horror Month! I treat every month like Women In Horror month by supporting all of my fellow gals in Horror, as often as I can...which is every day :) This month I am celebrating my working on my own portfolio, not selfishly, but to get more exposure to women in the Horror biz. I have upcoming articles in Paracinema Magazine, Ax Wound Zine (created by Women In Horror month founder, Hannah Neurotica), HorrorHound Magazine and Fangoria Magazine!

4: More importantly, how will you be celebrating Gay Pride Month this June?

I will be celebrating gay pride month by watching Showgirls over and over again in honor of my wonderful friend, celebrity manager, Mikey Perez. In addition to that I will be further screaming out loud about how insane it is that it isn't 100% legal for same sex couples to marry everywhere in the world. And attending the Rochester Gay Pride parade- Rochester has an amazing Gay community, including the Image Out Film Festival which features all LGBT films!

5: Is there a Grande Dame Moment in any horror film these days - some over-the-top performance by an actress akin to Bette Davis in “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane”?

Princess in The Loved Ones! One of the articles I am working on for Ax Wound is all about her. She is the fiercest cunt I have come across in a long time...aside from me of course!

6: Who would your inner Gay Man like to see running around naked in a horror film?

My inner bear loves cute, scrawny pretty boys, so let's say Joseph Gordon Levitt....I would ride him sore.

7: Who would your outer Female Horror Blogger like to see running around naked in a horror film?

My female blogger loves scrawny nerdy boys- give me Michael Cera or Jesse Eisenberg! I love a boy with a lisp....rawr.

8: How do you balance the over-all-fabulousness of blogging with the more mundane aspects that is your life?

THERE IS A WORLD OUTSIDE OF BLOGGING?! Oh wait, nevermind, silly me...that's Brandon Sites answer. My answer is...I forget, what was the question?

9: Do you think that there are some Lesbians Trapped in the Body of Straight Male Horror Bloggers?

I mean this in the most complimentary way, and only because they are so supportive of females- James Cortez (Planet of Terror), Zach Shildwachter (Z for Zombies) and John Squires (Freddy In Space). Those three guys right there, make me proud to be a blogger/sitester just because they raise the female flag so high and are such righteous feminists!

10: Gay or Straight, Trapped or Out: What is your view on Horror Blogging in General these days?

To anybody who cares about writing and spreading their love of Horror it is still a beautiful arena to share the passion and make new friends and peers. Sadly to most (Brandon Sites, Rhonny Rheaper, Aleata Illusion, Cruella Moxham) it's all a race to see who can make themselves cyber famous first. Newsflash: You will never get famous the way you are trying to. Secondly, learn how to spell, use grammar, stop selling your souls for screeners, stop cutting, some of you should stop plagiarizing, remember there were films before Saw, reviews should be more than two sentences long if you want to be taken seriously, there is a life outside of dressing like a zombie 24/7, everyone is sick of zombie walks and most of all, pull your heads out of each other's asses. Nobody outside of a small corner of the blogosphere has any idea who you are. We're all nobodies, don't forget that.

11: BONUS QUESTION: It's Friday Night, what are we drinking bitches?

KAHLUA!

Gay Men Trapped in the Body of a Female Horror Blogger 2: Brittney-Jade Colangelo (AKA Jude Winchester)

Our next Gay Man Trapped in the Body of a Female Horror Blogger is the multi tasking Queen (and I do mean Queen) of the fucking world, Brittney-Jade Colangelo.  BJ runs the much loved blog, Day of the Woman  .  She's also got her irons in a dozen other fires.  When not twirling batons higher, further and faster than Suzanne Sugarbaker ever dreamed;  Ms. Colangelo's Inner Gay Male is a fierce drag queen!  But don't take our word for it, let's hear from Miss Thang herself:

1: Everyone knows your Female Horror Blogger Name, what's the name of the Gay Man Trapped inside?

My gay man's name is Jude Winchester, he's a tall British man with a penchant for red wine, middle eastern tapestry, Judy Garland, Tim Curry, and Steinbeck novels. However his alter ego drag name is Stella Elixir. She's a fierce bitch with the ability to turn any man her way with a flick of her four inch fingernails. It's a pleasure to meet you.

2: Does your inner Gay Man ever color your opinion on the films you are watching, and if so, how?

You know, I try to separate the two/three of us as much as humanly possible...but God damn it if I'm not a sucker for Kevin Bacon in F13 if only for that award winning bulge. It also becomes quite difficult for me not to desire someone to die simply because they have awful hair, an annoying voice, camel toe/tail, or horrible wit. This is also why Tina in Nightmare on Elm Street should have survived. Woman has a tongue as sharp as my stiletto pumps.

3: How will you be celebrating Women in Horror Month this February? Do you celebrate it? If not, why not?

Of course! I've been celebrating by promoting as many events as humanly possible and creating lists with so much Girl Power, the Spice Girls want to sue me for copyright infringement. Jude, however, thinks that by drawing so much attention to the differences in the sexes that I'm hindering the progress of women. Psh, men.

4: More importantly, how will you be celebrating Gay Pride Month this June?

Is that even a question?! I'm going to the pride marches, holding a nude bake sale, offering complimentary Brazilian waxes for any and all lesbians who are ready to trim the hedges, and I'm currently casting for an all-male Broadway tribute to DALLAS.

5: Is there a Grande Dame Moment in any horror film these days - some over-the-top performance by an actress akin to Bette Davis in “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane”?

I'm insulted you would even try to put Bette Davis in the same category as anyone other than Bette Davis. I'm so insulted, I can't even answer this question. I hope you're ashamed of yourself.

6: Who would your inner Gay Man like to see running around naked in a horror film?

Sign me up for a slice of Johnathan Rhys Meyers and Matthew Morrison! Please and thank you!

7: Who would your outer Female Horror Blogger like to see running around naked in a horror film?

Mila Kunis and Jim Sturgess. Over and over and over again. I was SO close in Black Swan, and it was more Portman than Kunis. I R Disapoint.

8: How do you balance the over-all-fabulousness of blogging with the more mundane aspects that is your life?

I've hired a small Himalayan woman named Emesta who does all of my filing, emailing, phone messaging, scheduling, and she's gotten really good at telling people "I'm in a meeting" when I'm really just playing Robot Unicorn Attack or creeping on Facebook.

9: Do you think that there are some Lesbians Trapped in the Body of Straight Male Horror Bloggers?

No. Men don't have the desires to wear Birkenstocks...ever.

10: Gay or Straight, Trapped or Out: What is your view on Horror Blogging in General these days?

I think horror blogging in general has lost that lovin' feeling. A majority of bloggers have become more concerned with becoming this pseudo e-celebrities instead of actually blogging. Horror blogs are filled with mediocre reviews of "AMAZING!" films that are actually not even qualified to wipe one's ass.

11: BONUS QUESTION: It's Friday Night, what are we drinking bitches?

PINEAPPLE VODKATINI'S!!!!!

Gay Men Trapped in the Body of a Female Horror Blogger 1 : Andre Dumas (AKA Babs McNealy)

Someone went and made February "Women in Horror Month" - I am not sure who this person was, or what their motive may have been but here at Billy Loves Stu we love a meaningless celebration as much as the next guy.  We also love certain Female Horror Bloggers  who are so FABULOUS, they must really be Gay Men Trapped in the Body of a Female Horror Blogger.

Our first subject is the lovely and talented muscle stud, Andre Dumas who runs The Horror Digest. Andre recently sat down with us at BLS International Headquarters after a grueling work-out session at Gold's Gym and had this to say:

1: Everyone knows your Female Horror Blogger Name, what's the name of the Gay Man Trapped inside?

Babs McNealy

2: Does your inner Gay Man ever color your opinion on the films you are watching, and if so, how?

Occasionally I find that although a film may encapsulate what we in the business like to call, "great film-making"---it could still quite possibly benefit from the presence of a song and dance number.  Imagine the possibilities of Norman Bates for instance, in the midst of an ambush wearing his mother's dress and a bad wig...imagine if he broke out in song and dance. Brilliance? I think so.

3: How will you be celebrating Women in Horror Month this February? Do you celebrate it? If not, why not?

I will celebrate by attending WiH month film festivals in Boston and by running naked through the streets on my lunch break. I celebrate it for a number of reasons not because I am a woman, but because women in the horror biz are often looked over. Mostly I refer to the directorial side of the horror industry and even smaller things like women writers in print. Although I have a man's name, I always find it funny that so many of my readers assume that I am a man--even though I use terms like My VAGINA on a daily basis and talk about my cat a lot. There is also a picture of me on the sidebar. It's just one of those small things that so wonderfully points out how people are so quick to make judgments. It's the same way people for some reason always immediately refer to people's pets as a "he" without knowing.

4: More importantly, how will you be celebrating Gay Pride Month this June?

I'm from the Cape, and it is very possible that I will be attending the gay pride parade in Provincetown. I have not been to this since 8th grade which believe it or not--is where I saw my first real life penis. On a disco fever float, in which a man sitting down scantily clad in a silver mini skirt, was not wearing panties. Ah, memories.

5: Is there a Grande Dame Moment in any horror film these days - some over-the-top performance by an actress akin to Bette Davis in “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane”?

When Vincent Cassell donned a wig and a dress and played his pregnant sister in Sheitan? Does that count? Hmmm if not than maybe most recent I would possibly suggest Natalie Portman in Black Swan. Over the top in all the right places though---and exquisite.

6: Who would your inner Gay Man like to see running around naked in a horror film?

Daniel Craig...mmmmm

7: Who would your outer Female Horror Blogger like to see running around naked in a horror film?

Still, Daniel Craig.

8: How do you balance the over-all-fabulousness of blogging with the more mundane aspects that is your life?

Taking a daily Multi-Vitamin is very important. Also, lately when blogging and writing gets to be a little too much sometimes, I put on ABBA and the Village People and dance around the kitchen like a maniac. It really helps.

9: Do you think that there are some Lesbians Trapped in the Body of Straight Male Horror Bloggers?

Hmmm I don't recall too many lesbians ranking the greatness of a horror movie on how many times someone gets naked. BUT most of the straight male horror bloggers I know do have class--and so do lesbians so yes, definitely.

10: Gay or Straight, Trapped or Out: What is your view on Horror Blogging in General these days?

Horror blogging often gets misinterpreted as a giant cry for attention or as a vehicle for self promotion. While I do believe that happens more than I would like to see--I think horror blogging in general does a lot more than people give it credit for. More often than not, people want to read reviews written by people that do not feature pop up ads of the very film they are reviewing. Or they want to divulge in a little creativity from time to time instead of the same old boring news stories. Blogging allows for that freedom. Sometimes I don't italicize movie titles not because I'm lazy but because I can! Also sometimes I use run on sentences and it feels really good.

11: BONUS QUESTION: It's Friday Night, what are we drinking bitches?

I'm partial to anything that involves gin, but cheap beer will always be in heart forever.

Seven Minutes of Mind Blowing Imagery: SMOKE

I was recently contacted by Grzegorz Cisiecki, the screenwriter and director of a short film titled, Smoke (Dym).  He wrote me and asked if I would view his film - and I did.

When I was through, I did not know what to make of what I'd just seen.  So I watched it again.

Still unsure of what the point was, I watched a third and fourth time - but to no avail.  Maybe I'm that dense.  However, as much as I was confused about what I was seeing, I was hypnotized by the beauty - the dream-like sensuality, and the overall composition.

With very obvious nods to David Lynch, Stanley Kubrick and Ingmar Bergman; Smoke will mesmerize and confound the viewer and stay with him or her long after the final haunting image.

But don't take my word for it, have a look-see.

Prepare to have your mind blown:
